New national parks declared in WA’s Gascoyne and Murchison regions
New national parks and nature reserves have been declared in WA’s Gascoyne and Murchison regions on Wajarri Country — protecting 816,000 hectares of WA’s amazing nature and culture.
The proposed Burringurrah (Mount Augustus), Muggon and Dalgaranga national parks and Lakeside Conservation Park will cover an area nearly four times the size of the ACT and will help protect more of WA’s incredible Wildflower Country.
The new parks will be jointly-managed with Wajarri Yamaji Aboriginal Corporation and the WA Government, and will provide increased protection for Burringurrah (Mount Augustus) and other important sites on Wajarri Country.

These new parks have been created under the WA Government’s Plan for Our Parks initiative, which has expanded protection for WA’s unique environment by over 3.5 million hectares. Plan for Our Parks has helped create jobs and boost regional economic opportunities through tourism and Aboriginal ranger positions.
The parks on Wajarri Country will see more protection for 26 threatened species such as the brush-tailed mulgara, vulnerable malleefowl, long-tailed dunnart and the rare Mount Augustus foxglove.
A huge congratulations to the Wajarri Traditional Owners, Wajarri Yamaji Aboriginal Corporation and the WA Government for this significant step in protecting more of WA’s nature for future generations.
Thanks to your support, we have achieved greater protection for WA!
