New Jilgu National Park announced in Mid West-Gascoyne
There are some exciting things happening for WA’s nature!
A new national park on Nharnuwangga, Wajarri and Ngarlawangga Country has been created in our Mid West-Gascoyne region – protecting an additional 100,000 hectares of WA’s nature!
Jilgu National Park will be jointly-managed with Nharnuwangga, Wajarri and Ngarlawangga Traditional Owners, Jidi Jidi Aboriginal Corporation, and the WA Government, and will help protect our threatened and endangered animals like the black-flanked rock wallaby, long-tailed dunnart and brush-tailed mulgara.
The new park has been created under the WA Government’s Plan for Our Parks initiative, which has already added more than 2.6 million hectares of new parks to WA’s conservation estate.
The creation of Jilgu National Park is a major win for the future protection of nature in WA, but there’s more work to do, with crucial habitat and unique species still needing our help.
What makes WA special is at risk, with threats like climate change, habitat loss and invasive species decimating our unique plants and animals, landscapes and culture. If we don’t act now to protect our beautiful natural legacy, it will be gone forever.
National parks play a key role in protecting our native species, landscapes and culture, and through joint-management with Traditional Owners can create long-lasting benefits for economic development and job creation on Country.
With your support, we can achieve a greater commitment to protect more of WA’s nature in 2024!
