Fortescue Marsh Nature Reserve
The new Fortescue Marsh Nature Reserve will protect over 100,000 hectares of the Pilbara’s largest wetland on Nyiyaparli Country!
This reserve will help protect threatened species, like the night parrot, northern quoll, bilby, and Pilbara olive python. It will also protect areas of cultural significance for Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners.
The new reserve will be jointly managed by Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation and the WA Government, and will create ranger jobs for Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners to work on Country.
A huge congratulations to the Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners, Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation, Premier Roger Cook, Environment Minister Reece Whitby MLA, and the WA Government for coming together to protect WA’s incredible nature for future generations.
| UPDATE As of December 2025, the joint management plan was finalised for the Fortescue Marsh Nature Reserve, solidifying protection for approximately 107,000 hectares of the Pilbara’s largest and most significant wetlands on Nyiyaparli Country. This landmark plan will guide how the reserve is cared for over the next decade and ensures the area’s rich cultural values, seasonal wetlands and diverse wildlife are protected for future generations. This joint management arrangement reflects a shared commitment to Aboriginal leadership in conservation, ensuring Fortescue Marsh is managed in a way that respects culture, strengthens Country and protects nature for future generations. |
